Enzo Maresca has named the Chelsea player who’s showing signs he can be a leader at Stamford Bridge.

Enzo Maresca has surprised many Chelsea supporters recently by firing a dig at Reece James and his leadership. The 24-year-old defender has come under-fire from the Blues manager for his impact as the club captain.

During an interview with Football.London this week, Maresca claimed he “expected more” of James as a leader.

While Maresca suggested there’s a general problem in the Chelsea squad with leadership, he did single out one star for praise and it looks like he’s outshining James.

Enzo Maresca praises Levi Colwill leadership

Maresca has hailed Chelsea’s Levi Colwill, 21, as an individual that’s beginning to show more leadership traits and speak up more.

Maresca said via Football.London: “I think we don’t have a proper leader… The one that is doing fantastic in this kind of thing is Levi. Levi probably at the beginning of the season was not a leader but now you can see that he is one of the guys that is always speaking.”

A huge season for Levi Colwill

Without doubt, Colwill needs to seize the huge chance this season to cement himself as a key player at Chelsea.

The 21-year-old centre-back has played every minute of the club’s opening eight Premier League matches, forming a good partnership in the heart of defence alongside Wesley Fofana.

Colwill, who’s a product of the Chelsea academy, is someone we consider to potentially be a future captain. It sounds like Maresca’s thinking along similar lines, too.

We’ve noticed instances of the England international being vocal and authoritative on the pitch, which is clearly something that the manager wants to see more from in his players.

It’s going to take some of the younger individuals to step up and mature faster than usual because the average age of the squad is so young.
